Al Jarreau was a 7x Grammy Award winning jazz singer and songwriter. He was known albums like Breakin’ Away and This Time. Jarreau was born Alwin Lopez Jarreau on March 12, 1940 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents were Emile and Pearl, a church minister and pianist. He had five siblings. Jarreau attended Lincoln High School where he was voted student council president. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ripon College, and a Master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa.
During college, Jarreau performed locally with the group, Indigos. He later performed with jazz musician George Duke. Jarreau gained early recognition working alongside guitarist Julio Martinez. They performed in number of Los Angeles nightclubs and gained television exposure through Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin.
Jarreau’s debut studio album, We Got By, was released in 1975. His best performing album, Breakin’ Away, was released in June 1981 by Warner Bros. Records. It peaked at #9 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. It was led by the single “We’re in This Love Together”. He also won Grammys for best male pop vocal performance and for best male jazz vocalist. Jarreau’s other albums include This Time (1980), Heaven and Earth (1992), and Givin’ It Up (2006). He sang the Grammy nominated theme song for the 1980s comedy-drama series, Moonlighting. His star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2001.
Al Jarreau died on February 12, 2017 at the age of 76. His official cause of death was not disclosed. He passed away while staying at a Los Angeles hospital. Jarreau was treated for respiratory and heart problems back in 2010. He was diagnosed with pneumonia in June 2012.
