William Joseph Schallert was an American actor, union activist, and former president of the Screen Actors Guild. He was best known for the ABC sitcom, The Patty Duke Show. Schallert was born on July 6, 1922 in Los Angeles, California. His father, Edwin, was a LA Times drama editor and his mother, Elza, a movie fan magazine writer. Schallert attended a seminary during his high school years followed by the University of Southern California. He also studied and lectured at Oxford University.
Schallert discovered his love for acting while attending UCLA. He was one of the founder of the Circle Theatre in 1946. Schallert began his acting career in the 1940s with bit roles. He held an uncredited role as a Philadelphia Banker in the 1947 film, The Foxes of Harrow. Other early film appearances include The Reckless Moment (1949), The Man from Planet X (1951), and Pillow Talk (1959) with Doris Day. More recent films include Teachers (1984), Innerspace (1987), and Shake, Rattle and Rock! (1994) with Renee Zellweger.
Schallert was probably best known for his roles in television. He appeared in Dick Powell’s Zane Grey Theatre from 1958 to 1961. He made guest appearances in Gunsmoke, The Partridge Family, and Steve Caynon. Schallert held the father figure role of “Martin Lane” in The Patty Duke Show from 1963 to 1966. He played the character “Leander Pomfritt” on the first three seasons of the sitcom, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Another memorable role was that of “Nilz Baris” in a 1967 episode of Star Trek. Other television shows include Get Smart, Perry Mason, and The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. His last television appearance was on a 2014 episode of 2 Broke Girls.
Schallert was the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1979 to 1981. He founded the Committee for Performance with Disabilities and was awarded the Ralph Morgan Award in 1993.
William Schallert died on May 8, 2016 at the age of 93. No official cause of death was reported. Schallert suffered from peripheral neuropathy and had to wear leg braces. He passed away at his home in Pacific Palisades, California. Schallert was 6ft 1in tall and had a net worth of $2 million. He was married to actress ‘Leah Waggner’ from 1949 until his death in 2016.
