Walter Cronkite was an American broadcast journalist and news anchor. He had a 19 year run as anchorman for CBS Evening News (1962-81). Cronkite was born to parents Helen and Walter Cronkite on November 4, 1916 in Saint Joseph, Missouri. His father was a dentist. Cronkite was an only child. He spent his early childhood in Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Houston, Texas in 1927. He attended San Jacinto High School and studied political science at the University of Texas at Austin. He dropped out in 1935 before completing a degree.
Cronkite worked on ‘The Daily Texan’ student newspaper during his time at the University of Texas. After college, he worked briefly for the Houston Post. He landed a job as a radio announcer for WKY in Oklahoma City in 1935. Cronkite joined the ‘United Press’ in 1937 as a news editor. He was later promoted to overseas war correspondent. Cronkite covered events like World War II, the Battle of the Bulge and the Nuremberg trials. He also served as the agency’s main Moscow reporter from 1946 through 1948.
In 1950, Cronkite was hired by Edward R. Murrow of CBS as a correspondent. He hosted the CBS shows, You Are There, The Morning Show, The Twentieth Century, and Man of the Week. Cronkite was named anchorman of the CBS Evening News in 1962. He held that position until his retirement in 1981. During his 19 years tenure, Cronkite reported on events like the assassination of president John F. Kennedy, the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Vietnam War and the Watergate Scandal. He was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981 by president Jimmy Carter. His autobiography, A Reporter’s Life, was published in 1996.
Walter Cronkite died on July 17, 2009 at the age of 92. His reported cause of death was cerebrovascular disease. He was cremated and his remains buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. Cronkite was married to advertising writer ‘Mary Elizabeth Maxwell’ from 1940 until her death in 2005. They had three children, Nancy, Kathy, and Walter III.
