Susan B. Anthony was an American abolitionist, education reformer, suffragist, civil rights and women’s rights activist. She played a vital role in acquiring the legal right of women to vote in the United States. Susan Brownell Anthony was born on February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. Her parents were Lucy Read and Daniel Anthony. She had 6 siblings including Daniel, Hannah, Mary and Merritt. Anthony grew up in a Quaker household. She attended a Quaker boarding school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The family moved to Rochester, New York in the mid 1840s.
In 1846, Anthony moved to Canajoharie to serve as head of the women’s department of the Canajoharie Academy. She held that position for two years. Anthony met Elizabeth Cady Stanton at an anti-slavery conference in 1851. The two shared similar interests and became lifelong friends. They co-founded the New York Women’s State Temperance Society in 1852, the Women’s Loyal National League in 1863, the American Equal Rights Association in 1866, and the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869. They fought for equal rights for women, the abolition of slavery, and the right for women to own property.
Anthony and Stanton created and published the women’s rights newspaper ‘The Revolution’ in 1868. The publication ran from January 1868 through February 1872. Anthony was arrested and convicted in 1872 for voting illegally in Rochester, New York. She was charged $100, a fine which she never paid. Anthony’s dream was realized in 1920 with the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which granted women the right to vote. Her portrait was added to the dollar coin in 1979 by the U.S. Treasury Department.
Susan B. Anthony died on March 13, 1906 at her home in Rochester, New York. She was 86. Her reported cause of death was complications from pneumonia. Her remains were buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester. Anthony never married and had no children.
