Rashaan Salaam was an American former professional football player. He stood 6ft 1in tall and played the running back position. He was the 1994 Heisman Trophy winner. Salaam was born to parents Khalada and Sultan on October 8, 1974 in San Diego, California. His father played running back for the Cincinnati Bengals. Salaam attended La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego. He continued his education at the University of Colorado.
Salaam started out playing eight-man football at La Jolla Country Day School. He earned high school All-American honors and was later inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame. Salaam played four seasons of college football at the University of Colorado (1992-94). As a junior he rushed for 2,055 yards, 24 touchdowns and led the Colorado Buffaloes to a 11-1 record. Salaam won the Heisman Trophy in 1994, the first for Colorado. He also won the Doak Walker Award and was named unanimous first-team All-American.
Salaam was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 21st overall pick in the 1995 NFL draft. He rushed for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns his rookie year. He was dropped by the Bears in 1997 due to injuries and marijuana abuse. Salaam played two games with the Cleveland Browns in 1999. He played briefly for the Memphis Maniax (2001) in the XFL and later for the Toronto Argonauts (2004) in the CFL.
Rashaan Salaam died on December 5, 2016 at the age of 42. His reported cause of death was suicide by gunshot. He was found dead at Eben G. Fine Park in Boulder, Colorado. Salaam is survived by his parents and his siblings, Jubali Alaji and Atiya Henry.
