Powers Boothe was an Award-winning American film and television actor. His screen credits include Sin City, Deadwood, Nashville, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Boothe was born to parents Emily and Merrill on June 1, 1948 in Snyder, Texas. He grew up on a cotton farm and had two older brothers named Tommy and Riley. Boothe was an avid football player back in high school. He gave up the sport his junior year to focus on acting. Boothe attended Southwest Texas State University followed by Southern Methodist University. He graduated in 1972 with a MFA degree in drama.
Boothe began his acting career at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. He spent two years there before moving to New York City. He appeared in number of plays including ‘Henry IV, Part 2’, ‘Troilus and Cressida’ and ‘Richard III’. His Broadway stage debut was James McLure’s one-act play ‘Lone Star’ in 1979. Boothe’s first film appearance was an uncredited role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). He portrayed cult leader “Jim Jones” in the television film, Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones (1980). That performance earned him an Emmy Award for outstanding lead in a movie. Other early films include Cruising (1980) with Al Pacino, Southern Comfort (1981) with Keith Carradine, and Red Dawn (1984) with Patrick Swayze.
Boothe starred as “Philip Marlowe” in the HBO mystery series, Philip Marlowe, Private Eye (1983-86). He portrayed “Curly Bill Brocius” in the western, Tombstone (1993), alongside Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Boothe co-starred as “Alexander Haig” in Oliver Stone’s biographical film, Nixon (1995). He held a supporting role as “Senator Roark” in Sin City (2005) and later as “Gideon Malick” in The Avengers (2012). His television credits include the series Deadwood, 24, Nashville and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s also done voice roles for the shows Justice League Unlimited, The Looney Tunes Show, Ben 10, and the video games ‘Turok’ and ‘Hitman: Absolution’.
