Mother Mary Angelica was an American Franciscan nun and founder of the Eternal Word Television Network. She was born Rita Antoinette Rizzo on April 20, 1923 in Canton, Ohio. Her parents John and Mae Helen Rizzo divorced in 1929. She was raised by her mom ‘Mae’ who worked several jobs to provide food and other necessities. Mae struggled with chronic depression and poverty. She would later land a job in the dry cleaning business. Angelica attended Canton McKinley High School. She graduated in 1941 and worked briefly at Timken Roller Bearing Company.
At age 21, Angelica was accepted as a postulant by the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. She was dubbed “Sister Rita” at Saint Paul’s Shrine in Cleveland on August 15, 1944. She was admitted to the order as a novice in 1945 and given the new title ‘Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation’. She established the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of the Angels monastery in 1966.
Angelica founded the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) in 1980. The television network broadcasted their first Catholic program on August 15, 1981. Angelica hosted her own talk show, Mother Angelica Live, from 1981-2001. EWTN has since broadcasted to over 250 million households across the globe. Angelica was honored with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
Mother Angelica passed away on March 27, 2016 (Easter Sunday). She was 92. Her reported cause of death was complications from stroke. She had suffered a stroke back in 2001 and was required to wear an eye patch because her eyelid wouldn’t close.
