Keith Emerson was an English musician, composer and songwriter. He was born to parents Dorothy and Noel Emerson on November 2, 1944 in Todmorden, Yorkshire. He grew up in Worthing, West Sussex where he learned classical music. Emerson’s first musical instrument was the Hammond organ which he bought on hire purchase at age 15. He switched to the keyboard later on, making it his instrument of choice.
Emerson formed his first commercially successful band, The Nice, in 1967. The group was known for combining rock, Jazz and classical sounds. Emerson later acquired a Moog synthesizer and became the first artist to use the device while on tour. In 1970, he formed the supergroup, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, along with members Greg Lake and Carl Palmer. The group was signed to Atlantic Records and their self titled debut album was released on November 20, 1970. Other notable albums include Tarkus, Pictures at an Exhibition, and Brain Salad Surgery. The group disbanded in 1979 and reformed in 1991.
Emerson’s music was featured on several movies and television shows including Inferno (1980), Nighthawks (1981), Murder Rock (1984) and Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). He composed for the animated television series, Iron Man, which ran from 1994 to 1996.
Keith Emerson died on March 10, 2016 at the age of 71. His death is being investigated as a possible suicide by gunshot. Emerson is survived by ex-wife, Elinor, and their sons, Aaron Ole and Damon Keith. His dead body was discovered by his longtime partner, Mari Kawaguchi. Emerson was 5ft 4in tall. He was rated among the top keyboardist in rock history.
