John F. Kelly is the 5th United States Secretary of Homeland Security. He’s a retired four-star US Marine Corps general and former commander of the US Southern Command. Kelly was born into an Irish Catholic family on May 11, 1950 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was raised in the neighborhood of Brighton. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1976. Kelly continued his education at Georgetown School of Foreign Service. He graduated with a MS degree in National Security Studies in 1984.
Kelly served briefly as a United States Merchant Marine. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970 and was discharged from duty in 1972 with the title of sergeant. Upon completion of Officer Candidate School, Kelly was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He served as company commander in the Second Marine Division and was promoted to major in 1987. Kelly later became commanding officer of the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in the First Marine Division. He held that title for two years until 1994.
Kelly completed his studies at the National War College in Washington D.C. in 1995. Upon graduation he worked as a Commandant’s Liaison Officer to the U.S. House of Representatives. Kelly returned to the First Marine Division in 2002 and was promoted to general a year. He was named major general in 2007. He was also named as commander of the First Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton, California. Kelly served as military assistant to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and later Leon Panetta. He served as Commander of the United States Southern Command from 2012 to 2016 under president Barack Obama.
Kelly was nominated to the Department of Homeland Security by President Donald Trump in December 2016. He was sworn into office as the 5th Secretary of Homeland Security on January 20, 2017 by Vice President Mike Pence. Kelly will lead the third largest federal department in the United States. He will oversee immigration services, border protection and the construction of Trump’s border wall.
John F. Kelly married New Jersey native ‘Karen Hernest’ in 1976. They had three children, Robert, John and Kathleen. Robert Kelly was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010 at age 29. He held the title of First Lieutenant.
