Jim Harrison was an American poet, novelist and essayist. He was best known for the novella ‘Legends of the Fall (1979)’ and for novels like Dalva (1988) and True North (2004). Harrison was born to parents Norma and Winfield on December 11, 1937 in Grayling, Michigan. He became blind in the left eye after an accident during his childhood. He attended Haslett High School and earned his diploma in 1956. He studied comparative literature at Michigan State University earning his B.A in 1960 and his M.A. in 1964. A tragic automobile accident claimed the life of his father and sister in 1958.
Harrison taught English at Stony Brook University from 1965-1966. His early career as a poet started in the mid 1960s. His first collection of poetry was ‘Plain Song (1965)’ followed by ‘Walking (1967)’ and ‘Locations (1968)’. More recent publications include Saving Daylight (2006), Songs of Unreason (2011) and Dead Man’s Float (2016). Harrison’s first fiction novel was ‘Wolf: A False Memoir’ which was published in 1971. He followed up with A Good Day to Die (1973) and Farmer (1976). One of Harrison’s most popular work was Legends of the Fall (1979). It featured three novellas “Revenge”, “The Man Who Gave Up His Name” and “Legends of the Fall”. Two of these pieces were adopted into feature films. More recent novellas include Julip (1994), The Summer He Didn’t Die (2005), and The Ancient Minstrel (2016).
Jim Harrison died on March 26, 2016 at the age of 78. His reported cause of death was heart attack. He was married to ‘Linda King’ from 1959 until her death in 2015. They had two daughters, Jamie Potenberg and Anna Hjortsberg.
