Jamala is a Ukranian singer, songwriter and actress. She won the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “1944”. Jamala was born Susana Jamaladinova on August 27, 1983 in Osh, Kyrgyzstan. Her mother, Halyna, is Armenian and her father, Alim, is Crimean Tatar. She has a sister named Evelina. Jamala took piano lessons as a child and attended Simferopol Music College. She continued her music at Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, where she majored in opera singing.
Jamala gained recognition after she won the grand prize at the ‘New Wave’ International Contest of Young Pop Singers in 2009. Her debut studio album, For Every Heart, was released in 2011 by Moon Records. The album features a mix of pop, soul and jazz. Her second album, All or Nothing, was released in 2013 followed by her first EP, Thank You, in 2014. Jamala was chosen to represent Ukraine in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. She performed the single “1944” which told the story of the deported Crimean Tartars in the 1940s by Joseph Stalin. She finished in first place ahead of Australia’s Dami Im.
Aside from music, Jamala has some experience as a film and theater actress. Her stage credits include ‘The Spanish Hour (2009)’, and Vasiliy Barchatov production on Bondiana motif in 2010. She was cast as “Olga” in the 2014 drama film, The Guide. She played the role of “Caterpillar” in ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ in 2014. She was also featured in several video clips including History Repeating (2009), Smile (2011), and All These Simple Things (2013).
