Pierre Boulez was a French composer and conductor. He won a total of twenty six Grammy Awards and was known for his use of integral serialism. He was born on March 26, 1925 in Montbrison, Loire, France. He grew up in a Catholic household but would later turn to atheism. Prior to music, he excelled at mathematics in hopes of becoming an engineer. He studied music at the Paris Conservatory under the composer Olivier Messiaen.
Boulez composed his first piano sonata in 1946, second in 1948 and third in 1955-57. He served as music director of the Jean-Louis Barrault and Madeleine Renaud theater company from 1946 to 1955. Boulez was chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1971-1975 and music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1971-1977. He also played an integral role in the development of controlled chance and electronic music.
Pierre Boulez died on January 5, 2016 at the age of 90. His cause of death was not disclosed. He never married, had no children, and kept his sexuality hidden.
