Katherine Helmond is an American television actress and director. She played memorable roles as “Emily Dickinson” on Meeting of Minds, “Mona Robinson” on Who’s the Boss? and “Lois Whelan” on Everybody Loves Raymond.
Helmond was born on July 5, 1929 to parents Joseph and Thelma. She grew up in Galveston, Texas and attended Catholic school as a child. Helmond attended Bob Jones University for a year in 1955 but never graduated. She also taught acting in university theatre programs.
Helmond made her television debut in the 1960s but her big break came in the 1970s. Her big screen debut was the 1971 romantic drama film, Believe in Me. She has since appeared in over 20 films including Family Plot, Brazil and The Legend of Lizzie Borden. She was nominated for a Tony Award in 1973 followed by four consecutive Emmy nominations from 1978-1981.
