Jonathan Brandis was an American actor and director. He was best known for the television series seaQuest DSV and for the film, The Never Ending Story II. Brandis was born on April 13, 1976 in Danbury, Connecticut. His mother, Mary, was a school teacher, and his father, Gregory, a firefighter.
Prior to acting, Brandis found early success as a child model. He appeared in over 80 commercials throughout his career. Brandis made his television debut in a 1982 episode of One Life to Live. Other early television shows include Kate & Allie, L.A. Law, and the pilot for Good Morning, Miss Bliss. His feature film debut was Fatal Attraction (1987) where he played the role of a party guest. Early film appearances include Stepfather II (1989) with Terry O’Quinn, and Ghost Dad (1990) with Bill Cosby.
Brandis landed his first lead role as “Bastian Bux” in the fantasy film, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990). He picked up a Saturn Award nomination for his performance. Other notable films include IT (1990) with Tim Curry, Sidekicks (1992) with Chuck Norris, and Ladybugs (1992) with Rodney Dangerfield. He played his last movie role in the 2003 film, Puerto Vallarta Squeeze. Brandis won a Young Artist Award for his role of “Lucas Wolenczak” in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi series seaQuest DSV (1993-96). He voiced the character “Mozenrath” from the animated series, Aladdin (1994-95).
Jonathan Brandis died on November 12, 2003 at the age of 27. His reported cause of death was suicide by hanging. His remains were cremated. Brandis was 5ft 9in tall and of English, Irish, Italian and German descent. He dated actresses Vinessa Shaw, Tatyana Ali and Monica Keena.
