Jimmy Bain was a Scottish musician and songwriter. He played the bass guitar and was a member of the bands Rainbow and Dio. He was born James Stewart Bain on December 19, 1947 in Newtonmore, Scotland. He was 5ft 7in tall and started out as a teenager playing in local amateur bands.
Bain played professionally with ‘Street Noise’ and was later recruited to play in the British rock band, Rainbow. The band’s second studio album ‘Rising’ was released in 1976. Bain formed his own band ‘Wild Horses’ in 1978 and released their self titled debut album in 1980. He became a member of the heavy metal band ‘Dio’ in 1983 alongside lead vocalist Ronnie James Dio. He co-wrote several of the group’s hit songs including “Rainbow in the Dark” and “Holy Diver”. Dio’s debut album ‘Holy Diver’ was released on May 25, 1983.
Jimmy Bain died at the age of 68 on January 24, 2016. His official cause of death was not specified. His death came while on cruise with Def Leppard’s “Hysteria On The High Seas”. He was never married and had no children. He was the founder of the hunger relief foundation, Hear’n Aid.
