Jerry Lewis was an American comedian, actor and film director. He was best known for his slapstick humor. He was one-half of the comedy duo ‘Martin and Lewis’ alongside Dean Martin. His film credits include The Delicate Delinquent (1957), Rock-A-Bye Baby (1958), The Bellboy (1960) and The Nutty Professor (1963). Lewis was born Joseph Levitch on March 16, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey. His father, Daniel Levitch, was a MC and vaudeville performer, and his mother, Rachel, a piano player. Lewis attended Irvington High School in Essex County, New Jersey. He dropped out before completing a diploma.
Lewis began performing with his parents at the early age of 5. By age 15 he dropped out of school and took up performing full time. It was around this time that he developed his ‘Record Act’ in which he mimics the lyrics of popular songs on a phonograph. Lewis met Dean Martin in 1945 and the two formed the comedy team, Martin and Lewis. They performed in various nightclubs and made appearances on several live television programs. Their signature radio comedy show ‘The Martin and Lewis Show’ debut in 1949. The duo’s debut film, ‘My Friend Irma’ was also released in 1949. Several other films followed including The Stooge (1952), Artists and Models (1955) and Hollywood or Bust (1956).
Lewis embarked on a solo career in the 1950s. His solo film debut, The Delicate Delinquent, was released in 1957. He appeared in more than 40 films from 1957 to 2016. Selected films include It’s Only Money (1962), The Ladies Man (1961) and The Nutty Professor (1963). Lewis’ directorial debut was the comedy, The Bellboy (1960). He wrote, directed, produced and starred in a number of his own films. Lewis was awarded the Emmy Governors Award in 2005, and France’s Legion of Honor Award in 1984. He was honored with 2 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame including one for motion pictures. He’s also won several lifetime achievement awards for his contribution to the entertainment industry.
Lewis taught film courses at the University of Southern California. His students included Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. A collection of his lectures were published in the 1977 book ‘The Total Film-Maker’. Lewis served as National Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association from 1954 to 2011. He hosted the annual MDA ‘Labor Day Telethon’ that raised more than $2.5 billion from donations. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for his charitable work.
Jerry Lewis died on August 20, 2017 at his home in Las Vegas. He was 91. He died of natural causes. Lewis was about 5ft 10in tall and he was of Jewish ancestry. His net worth was estimated at $50 million prior to his death. Lewis was married to first wife ‘Patti Palmer’ from 1944 to 1983. He’s survived by is second wife, SanDee Pitnick, and seven children. One of his sons, Gary Lewis, is a musician and leader of the rock band Gary Lewis & the Playboys.
