Blowfly was an American rapper, songwriter and record producer. He was born Clarence Henry Reid on February 14, 1939 in Cochran, Georgia. The nickname “Blowfly” was given to him after his grandmother caught him singing dirty song lyrics. He moved to Miami, Florida in the mid 1960s where he worked with producer Henry Stone. He wrote and produced for artists like Betty Wright, Gwen McCrae and Bobby Byrd. Reid voiced and released several of his own songs including the 1969 hit single “Nobody but You Babe”.
Blowfly’s debut studio ‘The Weird World of Blowfly’ was recorded in 1970 and released in 1971. He signed to the independent label, Alternative Tentacles, in 2005 and released the album ‘Fahrenheit 69’. He followed suit with the release of ‘Blowfly’s Punk Rock Party’ in 2006. He recorded a total of 26 albums under the alter ego Blowfly. He was the subject of the 2012 documentary film ‘The Weird World of Blowfly’ directed by Jonathan Furmanski. The film was shot over a two year period and covers his legacy and contribution to music history.
Blowfly died on January 17, 2016 at the age of 76. His reported cause of death was terminal liver cancer. His daughter Tracy LaShawn Reid was a former WNBA player.
