Gwen Ifill was an American news anchor, journalist and author. She was best known as the moderator of Washington Week and as co-anchor of PBS NewsHour. Ifill was born Gwendolyn L. Ifill on September 29, 1955 in New York City. Her parents were Eleanor and Oliver Urcille Ifill, Sr. She had four siblings, Roberto, Earle, Oliver Jr. and Maria. Ifill’s father was a minister and as a result the family moved around. They lived in places like New England, Pennsylvania, and Buffalo. Ifill attended Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated in 1977 with a BA degree in communications.
Ifill started out as an intern with the Boston Herald-American. The company hired her in 1977 as food columnist. She held that position until 1980. Ifill spent her early career working for the Baltimore Evening Sun followed by The Washington Post. She was a White House Correspondent for The New York Times 1991 through 1994. She then worked 5 years as Chief Congressional and political correspondent for NBC (1994-99).
Ifill began her long tenure with PBS in 1999. She served as moderator of the Washington Week in Review, and as senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour. She was promoted to anchor and managing editor of NewsHour in August 2013. Ifill moderated the vice presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards in 2004, and between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin in the 2008. Her book, The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, was published in 2009. Ifill was awarded the Fourth Estate Award in 2015. She was honored with the John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2016.
Gwen Ifill died on November 14, 2016 at the age of 61. Her official cause of death was complications of uterine cancer. She reportedly died in hospice care following several months of treatment. Ifill never married and had no children. She’s survived by two brothers and a sister.
