Guy Charles Clark was a Grammy-winning country/folk singer, songwriter and guitarist. He was known for hits like “Desperados Waiting for a Train”, and “Texas, 1947”. Clark was born on November 6, 1941 in Monahans, Texas. He was raised mostly by his grandmother. His father was a World War II veteran who later became an attorney. Clark excelled at literature and sports while attending high school. He eventually learned to play and build guitars.
Clark became a member of the Peace Corps in 1963. He later moved to Houston where he survived by repairing guitars and performing in local venues. He met songwriter ‘Townes Van Zandt’ whom he worked with until his death in 1997. Clark moved to California in the late 1960s then to Nashville in 1971. He signed a recording contract with RCA and his debut studio album, Old No. 1, was released in 1975. The album peaked at #41 on the Billboard Country chart and featured the single “L.A Freeway”. His second album for RCA ‘Texas Cookin’ was released in 1976.
Clark later signed with Warner Bros and released three albums, Guy Clark (1978), The South Coast of Texas (1981), and Better Days (1983). He worked with several other labels including Sugar Hill Records, Asylum Records, and Dualtone Records. His latest album, My Favorite Picture of You, was released in July 2013. The album peaked at #5 on the US Folk Albums charts and won a Grammy for best folk album. Many of Clark’s songs were covered by artists like Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, and Jerry Jeff Walker. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004. He also won the AMA Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting in 2005.
Guy Clark died on May 17, 2016 at the age of 74. His official cause of death was not disclosed. However, he was a heavy smoker and had been battling cancer for several years. Clark was married to singer and painter ‘Susanna’ from 1972 until her death in 2012. She died of lung cancer.
