George Takei is an American actor, director, LGBT rights activist and author. He’s best known for his role as lieutenant “Sulu” from the original Star Trek television series and feature films. George Hosato Takei was born to parents Fumiko and Takekuma on April 20, 1937 in Los Angeles, California. He has two siblings, Henry and Nancy. Takei attended Los Angeles High School followed by the University of California at Berkeley. He completed his BA degree in Theater in 1960 and his MA in 1964. He also studied at the Shakespeare Institute in England, and at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan.
Takei began his career as a voiceover actor in the mid 1950s. His early voice gigs included Godzilla Raids Again (1955) and Rodan (1956). He followed up with small acting roles in live action films like Hell to Eternity (1960), Red Line 7000 (1965) and The Green Berets (1968). He also made guest appearances on the series Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, and Death Valley Days.
Takei landed his breakout role as Lieutenant “Hikaru Sulu” in the sci-fi television series, Star Trek. The show ran on NBC from September 1966 to June 1969 for a total of 79 episodes. The series also stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. The role of Sulu was reprised in Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-74) and later in six feature films.
Takei’s television credits include The Six Million Dollar Man, Hawaii Five-O, The Howard Stern Show, and Supah Ninjas. He’s done voice roles for The Simpsons, Kim Possible, Futurama and Mulan. He’s made cameo appearances in the films You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (2008) with Adam Sandler, and Entourage (2015) with Kevin Connolly. His stage credits consists of The Year of the Dragon (1974), The Wash (1990) and Allegiance (2012).
Takei’s star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986. He was honored with the “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette” by the Japanese government in 2004. Takei’s work in the LGBT community has earned him the LGBT Humanist Award and the GLAAD Vito Russo Award. He was presented the JANM Distinguished Medal of Honor in 2015 for his work with the Japanese American National Museum.
