Faten Ahmed Hamama was an Egyption actress, screenwriter and producer. She was born to Muslim parents on May 27, 1931 in Mansoura, Egypt. She had two siblings, Layla and Mazhar. Hamama studied acting at the High Institute of Acting in 1946. She graduated at the age of 16.
Hamama began her acting career at an early age. She was influenced by the works of Lebanese actress actress Assia Dagher. Her acting debut was the 1939 drama film, Happy Day. She was seven years old at the time. Hamama landed her first starring role as “Thoraya” in the 1946 drama film, The Angel of mercy. She followed up with prominent roles in Your Day will Come (1951), Struggle in the Valley (1954), and No Time for Love (1963). She was dubbed “lady of the Arabic screen” following her performance in Date with Live (1953).
Hamama left Egypt in 1966 but made her grand return in 1971. She voiced her opinion about the Egyptian government in the films The Empire of M (1972), and I Want a Solution (1974). She appeared in a few other films before going on another hiatus in 1993. Hamama returned in 2000 and starred in the soap opera mini-series, Face of the Moon. The show ran for 18 episodes and won a Best Series award in 2001.
Faten Hamama passed away on January 17, 2015 at the age of 83. No official cause of death was reported. She was married three times, first to Ezzel Dine Zulficar (1947-1954), followed by Omar Sharif (1955-1974), and finally Mohammad Abdel Wahab Mahmoud (1975-2015). She had two children, Tarek Sharif and Nadia Zulficar.
