Elie Wiesel was a Romanian-born American author, activist and educator. He was a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Eliezer Wiesel was born to parents Sarah and Shlomo on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Romania. He had three siblings, Beatrice, Hilda and Tzipora. Wiesel and his family were deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland in 1944. He was later sent to Buna Werke labor camp where he was forced to work under inhumane conditions. Wiesel lost both parents and one of his sisters during the Holocaust. Their camp was liberated by the United States in April 1945.
Wiesel studied French and writing at the Sorbonne in France from 1948 to 1951. He later worked as a journalist for various French and Israeli newspapers. He was encouraged by the French Nobel Laureate ‘François Mauriac’ to write about his Holocaust experiences. Wiesel published the book, And the World Would Remain Silent, in Yiddish in 1955. The book was translated into English as ‘Night’ and published in 1960. Several other translations have since emerged. The novels ‘Dawn’ was released in 1961 followed by ‘Day’ in 1962.
Wiesel made the move to the United States in 1955 and became a citizen in 1963. Some of his popular books include The Gates of the Forest (1966), The Oath (1973), and All Rivers Run to the Sea (1995). He was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992. As a political activist, Wiesel has spoken out on injustice in countries like South Africa, Bosnia and Cambodia. He also served as a professor at the City University of New York, and Boston University.
