Duke Kahanamoku was a Hawaiian swimmer, surfer, actor and sheriff. He was a five-time Olympic champion who’s contributed to the popularity of surfing in mainstream America. Kahanamoku was born on August 24, 1890 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He had eight siblings and his father ‘Duke Halapu’ was a police officer. He grew up in Waikiki where he attended Kaahumanu School followed by the Kamehameha Schools.
Kahanamoku spent much of his time developing his swimming and surfing skills at Waikiki Beach. He broke the 100-meter freestyle record in 1911 with an impressive time of 55.4 seconds. Kahanamoku made his first Olympic appearance in 1912. He won gold medals in the 100-meter freestyle and the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. He followed up with two gold medals in the 1920 Olympics and another one in 1924. Kahanamoku was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1984. He’s also a member of the Surfing Hall of Fame and the Swimming Hall of Fame.
Kahanamoku made his acting debut in 1925. He appeared in films like The Pony Express (1925), Isle of Sunken Gold (1927), Girl of the Port (1930), and Mister Roberts (1955). Kahanamoku was dubbed a hero in 1925 after he rescued eight men from a capsized boat. He served 13 consecutive terms as the sheriff of Honolulu from 1932 to 1961.
Duke Kahanamoku died on January 22, 1968 at the age of 77. His reported cause of death was heart attack. His remains were cremated and the ashes scattered at sea. A bronze statue was erected at Waikiki beach in Honolulu in his honor. Kahanamoku was married to ‘Nadine Alexander’ from 1940 until his death in 1968. The couple had no children.
