Burt Kwouk was a British actor best known for his role as “Cato” in The Pink Panther comedy film series. He was born Herbert W. Kwouk on July 18, 1930 in Warrington, Lancashire. Kwouk spent his early childhood in Shanghai, China before moving to the United States in the late 1940s. He attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Main, graduating in 1953. He eventually returned to England in 1954.
Kwouk’s feature film debut was the 1957 thriller, Windom’s Way. Other early films include The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958), Expresso Bongo (1959), and Satan Never Sleeps (1962). Kwouk was cast as “Cato Fong” in the Pink Panther film series starting with A Shot in the Dark in 1964. His seventh and last Pink Panther movie was ‘Son of the Pink Panther (1993)’ with Roberto Benigni and Claudia Cardinale. He also appeared in the James Bond films, Goldfinger (1964), Casino Royale (1967), and You Only Live Twice (1967).
Aside from films, Kwouk had a successful television career. He held small roles in the 1960s series, Danger Man, Man of the World, and The Champions. He played the role of “Major Yamauchi” in the drama series, Tenko (1981), and “Entwistle” in the sitcom, Last of the Summer Wine (2002-2010). He also appeared in The Hillary Hill Show (1997-2000), and did voice-over for Banzai (2001-2004).
Burt Kwouk died on May 24, 2016 at the age of 85. The cause and location of death was not disclosed. Kwouk was 5ft 5in and of Chinese descent. He was married to ‘Caroline Tebbs’ from 1961 until his death in 2016. They had one child, Christopher.
