Alan Young was an actor, voice artist and comedian. He also had success as a radio host and television personality. He played the memorable role of “Wilbur Post” in the television sitcom, Mister Ed. Angus ‘Alan’ Young was born on November 19, 1919 in North Shields, England. He spent his early childhood in Edinburgh, Scotland before moving to Canada at the age of six. Young served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He moved to Toronto, Canada upon his return.
Young began his radio career with the CBC network while attending high school. He moved to New York in 1944 with hopes of expanding his career. After a brief stint with the ‘Philco Radio Hall of Fame’, Young premiered his own radio show, The Alan Young Show (1944-1949). The show ran on NBC Radio followed by ABC, then back to NBC. Young starred on the radio drama-comedy series, Adventures in Odyssey (1994-2012), where he played the role of “Jack Allen”. Other radio appearances include Texaco Star Theater (1947-1948), Family Theater (1949-1950), and Sears Radio Theater (1979).
Young made his debut as an actor in the 1946 comedy film, Margie. In 1951, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Actor for the television adaption of The Alan Young Show. Young appeared in the films, Tom Thumb (1958) with Russ Tamblyn, The Time Machine (1960) with Rod Taylor, and Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) with Eddie Murphy. He held the role of “Wilbur” for five years on the CBS series Mister Ed. The show ran from 1961 to 1966 for a total of six seasons. Young also gained popularity for his voice acting roles. He voiced “Scrooge McDuck” in DuckTales from 1987 to 1990. Other voice roles include “Farmer Smurf” on The Smurfs, and “Haggis McHaggis” in The Ren & Stimpy Show.
Alan Young died on May 19, 2016 at the age of 96. He reportedly died of natural causes. He was staying at the Motion Picture & Television Home in Woodland Hills, California prior to his death. Young was married three times, first to ‘Mary Anne Grimes’ (1941-47), then to ‘Virginia McCurdy’ (1948-95), and finally to ‘Mary Chipman’ (1996-97).
